Green oasis! Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex set for a transformation into a lush space and educational haven
Heritage Malta will take on the responsibility of maintaining these green spaces once the transformation is complete.

A significant transformation is on the horizon for the Tarxien Prehistoric Complex in Malta, as two bare areas within the site are set to undergo a remarkable metamorphosis into a green haven and an educational space, all thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently inked between Heritage Malta and The Alfred Mizzi Foundation.

The larger of the two areas, situated behind the prehistoric complex, will soon become a lush green space fully equipped with carefully chosen indigenous and endemic trees and shrubs.

This transformation aims to create a serene environment for families to enjoy while preserving the archaeological integrity of the site. The species selection will mirror those that thrived during the Neolithic period, offering visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the ecological heritage of the region.

The second area, closer to the visitor centre, is poised to become Tarxien's second Ġnien Dinja Waħda garden, following the success of the first one at Għar Dalam. These gardens, aimed at educating children about nature, will feature indigenous and endemic flora, a seating area, and a freshwater pond, providing an immersive learning experience for young visitors.

The Alfred Mizzi Foundation, through the MOU, will finance the supply of trees and shrubs, irrigation systems, and other essential components for both areas. Heritage Malta will take on the responsibility of maintaining these green spaces once the transformation is complete.

This project will enhance the beauty and tranquillity of the Tarxien Prehistoric Complex, offering a respite from the bustling modern world while preserving its historic significance.
