Last weekend in Nadur, Gozo, a sharp-eyed observer spotted a little hedgehog out and about during the day. While Butternut, as she’s now affectionately called, seemed to be in good condition, her daytime outing raised alarms - hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, so seeing one active in daylight is often a sign that something’s wrong.
Upon being rescued by Wildlife Rescue Team volunteers, it was quickly confirmed that Butternut was suffering from a heavy internal parasite burden. Parasites are common in wild animals, but when their presence becomes overwhelming, it can lead to severe health issues, altered behavior, and eventually death if untreated. Thankfully, Butternut was rescued just in time. With the treatment provided immediately by a vet, she is now happily on the path to recovery!
Nature Trust reminds the public that if a hedgehog is ever spotted out during the day, even if it looks healthy, it’s crucial to act - Wildlife Rescue Team Malta can be reached at 99999505. Their trained volunteers, equipped with wildlife handling permits, are ready to step in and provide the necessary care. It's important to remember that all rescued animals are protected species in Malta, and harming them or keeping them as pets is illegal.
