Gozo
Gozo gone by! This 1960s snapshot of the island’s scenic views is road trip perfection
Golden days in Gozo!

Francesca Vella

The recent photos that have been emerging from Gozo have largely been ones of colourful chaos, bright costumes and crowds of thousands filling the Nadur square with floats and celebrations. But a newly shared image from the Department of Information offers a striking contrast, transporting us back to a much quieter time.

This snapshot from the 1960s captures a vintage car pulled over to the side of a scenic road, its driver pausing to take in the sweeping views below. The rolling fields and green hills – left to the imagination in this black-and-white image – paint a picture of Gozo’s more serene side, a side that still lingers if you know where to look!

Next time you’re there, why not try cruising along the beautiful road overlooking the Xwejni Salt Pans, or cross over to the western coast of the island where you can admire the dramatic cliffs where the Azure window once stood? You could even recreate a photo like this one, in colour!

When was your last scenic countryside drive?
