Game on! Traditional Maltese 'bocci' comes to Mellieha’s elderly residence with new pitch installation
The beloved game of 'bocci' - which traces its roots back to the Roman Empire and is played worldwide under various names like 'bocce' in Italy and 'boules' in France - has long been a favorite pastime in Malta, especially among older generations. Now, the residents of Dar il-Madonna in Mellieha can enjoy this traditional game right at home!

Following the success of the first bocci pitch at the Imtarfa elderly residence, a second one has now been inaugurated at the residence in Mellieha. This project, led by Anzjanita Attiva u Kura fil-Komunita (AAKK), is part of an ongoing effort to create more opportunities for seniors to stay active, both physically and socially.
The idea for the new pitch came directly from the residents themselves, many of whom had already participated in the launch of the Imtarfa pitch. Seeing their enthusiasm, the team made it a priority to build a space that is not only fun but also fully accessible, ensuring that people with mobility challenges, including wheelchair users, can take part.

More than just a game, bocci encourages movement, sharpens the mind, and fosters social connections, especially among men, who sometimes hesitate to join other activities. The pitch will be open to residents, visitors to the Day Center, and even other elderly members of the community, making it a hub for interaction and fun.
And there’s more to come! AAKK is already planning friendly tournaments between different residential homes and the wider community, giving seniors even more chances to connect and enjoy themselves.
