It’s no secret that Malta’s ferry routes are a lifeline for residents and tourists alike, but 2024 brought some impressive numbers that tell a story of growing demand and shifting travel patterns.
In the last three months of 2024, ferry traffic saw a notable increase compared to the same period in 2023, with the total number of trips increasing by a hefty 12.5%, while the number of vehicles and passengers rose by 1.3% and 2.6%, respectively.
The trends in vehicle and passenger traffic revealed some interesting weekend habits – throughout the entire year of 2024, Cirkewwa was busiest on Fridays and Saturdays for both vehicles and passengers. Meanwhile, at Mgarr Harbour, the return flow peaked on Sundays and Mondays for vehicles, with Sundays and Saturdays taking the lead for passengers.
October 2024 was the real standout, breaking records with 866 trips between Mgarr and Valletta—36% of all trips in the quarter! It also saw 111,503 passengers, making up nearly 45% of the total for the period.
Maybe it’s the cooler autumn weather or the smaller crowds, but October seemed to be the perfect time for a ferry adventure!
