An incredible achievement nonetheless!

Long distance swimmer and Maltese Olympian Neil Agius has announced that he took the difficult decision to end his 100-mile swim from Malta due to multiple jellyfish stings.

During the early morning of Tuesday 27th June, Neil swam through a swarm of jellyfish. After 4 hours, the pain and swelling became too much to bear causing Neil to decide to stop the swim. He had over 60 jellyfish stings

He had already arrived to Mallorca before he “voluntarily decided that the safest thing to do, was to abandon the swim plan”.

“It is so sad to see all that hard work we put into this challenge came to such a premature conclusion, I was feeling strong and ready to go the distance but fate had other plans”, Neil expressed.

This is the sport I have chosen that depends on so many variables- some we can be in control of, others unfortunately not”, he continued.

Neil was attempting such a difficult challenge to continue raising awareness and funds for ocean conservation.

The real challenge for ocean conservation still stands, I will be back”.

“I felt like I could do this forever but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be this time”

Neil still made Malta immensly proud!
