Extreme UV Index alert this week in Malta! Here’s how you can protect yourself from harmful sun exposure

Summer is here but beware of its rays! According to the popular Facebook weather page, The Maltese Islands Weather, the upcoming days are bringing intense sunshine, with the UV Index soaring to the highest levels of 10 and 11.

The page advises that it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with such extreme UV radiation and take extra precautions to safeguard your skin and eyes from harm.

Exposing unprotected skin and eyes to these high UV levels can lead to severe damage and quick sunburn. Therefore, it is advised to minimise sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are at their strongest. If you must be outdoors during these hours, prioritise seeking shade and employing protective measures.

To shield yourself effectively, you should also consider wearing sun-protective clothing that covers your arms and legs. A wide-brimmed hat will provide additional protection for your face, neck, and ears. And, don't forget to wear UV-blocking sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful rays.

Of course, applying sunscreen is a crucial step in your sun protection routine. Go for a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and generously apply it to all exposed areas of your skin. Remember to reapply every two hours, regardless of whether it's cloudy or sunny. After swimming or sweating, be sure to reapply as well, as water and perspiration can reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen.

The page also warms that it's important to note that certain surfaces can amplify UV exposure. Bright surfaces like sand and water reflect the sun's rays, intensifying the impact on your skin.
