Alex Dalli, a renowned artist, is set to captivate art enthusiasts with a solo exhibition titled "Il-Ħabba tal-Għajn" at the Malta Society of Arts from 8th to 28th June. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to delve into Dalli's artistic journey, which spans over 45 years and showcases his transition from the figurative to the abstract.

Located in Valletta, the exhibition curated by Gabriel Zammit sheds light on Dalli's remarkable artistic evolution. Dalli's pursuit of spirituality within art led him to explore subtle ideas, emotions, and abstract concepts, resulting in a parallel shedding of form. His signature minimalistic style, characterised by sensitivity to colour and surface, is a testament to his growth as an artist.

Dalli's compositions seamlessly merge the personal and the universal, with a particular focus on the often unnoticed and overlooked. His creative process extends beyond the canvas, embodying a cosmic perspective.

“Just as I myself grow, and the world develops around me, I also want to grow things and nourish that human creative ability, which mirrors the first act of creation,” says the artist.

The exhibition's curator, Gabriel Zammit, contextualises Dalli's artistic journey, drawing parallels between his creative evolution and the archetype of the poet/artist who gains deeper insight as they gradually lose sight of the external world.

''Homer, for example, went blind, as did Jorge Luis Borges, James Joyce and John Milton. As Alex goes blind to the world around him, his paintings open, through the deep darkness, a single bright eye (għajn), which has the capacity to pare back and reveal the centre (ħabba) and the hidden reality of things. Il-Ħabba tal-Għajn follows the artist’s long walk down the luminescent corridors of his own blindness.”

The exhibition takes inspiration from Michael Zammit's poetry cycle, "Għana 'l Hena," which delves into Sanskrit philosophy and mantra meditation. Zammit's words provide a complementary layer of meaning to Dalli's intricately coded images, enriching the viewer's experience.
