The production welcomes opera lovers and newcomers alike.
Malta’s rising opera stars will take centre stage this September as the Opera Nova Project presents a vibrant new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at Teatru Manoel, the island’s national theatre.
Taking place on 25th and 26th September at 7:30pm, the production will feature 26 local singers alongside one international guest artist, giving emerging Maltese talent a rare opportunity to shine on a major operatic stage.
The Opera Nova Project, led by Gillian Zammit and Denise Mulholland, is Malta’s premier platform for high-level classical voice training and performance. This production also highlights a unique collaboration with the Fames Institute in Macedonia, bringing together an orchestra of 25 young European musicians and nine emerging Maltese players, conducted by acclaimed Philip Walsh.
Directed by Denise Mulholland with musical direction by Gillian Zammit, audiences can expect an imaginative yet accessible interpretation of The Magic Flute, with performances designed to appeal to both seasoned opera lovers and newcomers alike. The opera will be sung in German with English subtitles, and spoken dialogue in English.
Ahead of the performances, the Opera Nova Project will host a public forum on 17th September at 4pm at Teatru Manoel, exploring ways to engage younger audiences with opera. Panel members include representatives from Teatru Manoel, Festivals Malta, the Astra and Aurora Theatres in Gozo, the Archbishop’s Delegate for Culture, as well as emerging opera enthusiasts and members of the public.
Supported by the Arts Council Malta, Festivals Malta, and APS Bank, this production of The Magic Flute promises a celebration of Maltese talent, international collaboration, and the timeless magic of Mozart.
