On Sunday 7th April, Heritage Malta is inviting you to a day of discoveries, as you step into the mesmerising world of Roman Malta at the Domvs Romana in Rabat and marvel at the National Museum of Natural History’s astounding collections in Mdina. Both sites will be open for free.
The Domvs Romana offers a unique glimpse into the private life of ancient Roman aristocracy. Although little remains of the original noble residence, the exquisite mosaics and artefacts preserved here attest to its former opulence.
The museum provides insight into the multifaceted lives of these favoured citizens of the ancient Roman Empire, exploring family dynamics, fashion, education, entertainment, and culinary delights. Highlight exhibits include the only set of marble statues portraying the Emperor Claudius and his family that can be seen in a private house – these artworks are usually found in public spaces.
A few steps away, in the stellar location of the 18th-century Vilhena Palace within the fortified city of Mdina, the National Museum of Natural History takes visitors on an immersive journey through the natural world.
A flying squid washed ashore in the 1980s, a 4000-year-old mummified Nile crocodile, the skull of a False Killer Whale Pseudorca crassidens, the fossilised head of a Crocodilian Tomistoma gaudense found in Gozo’s rocks, and the tooth of the Giant White Shark Carcharocles megalodon are but a few of the stars gracing the museum’s showcases.
Thanks to the collaboration of other entities, the day will be complemented with various activities and attractions for families in both sites, including hands-on activities for children, information stands about Heritage Malta memberships and passports, and book stalls. All children attending will receive a small gift as a token.
Opening hours are from 09:00 until 17:00, and admission is free for everyone. No pre-booking is required.
