When Mildred (Frances McDormand), a mother driven to the edge by her daughter’s unsolved murder, mounts three scathing billboards directed at the inefficiency of small town authorities, she instigates a showdown with the town’s revered chief of Police, William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) and his immature second-in-command, Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell). With pride and reputations hanging in the balance, the confrontation quickly escalates into violence. The third film from Irish screenwriter-playwright-director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, 2008; Seven Psychopaths, 2012) channels a modern, female variant of the classic hero in a showdown-style performance worthy of the Western genre.
