City of Humanity is a brand new opera cycle of 3 interrelated operas (which however are conceived in such a way that each can stand as a seperate work on its own). It is in fact the first ever Maltese opera cycle.
The first opera City of Humanity 1 – Behind the Fortifications shall be premiered in November 2018 when Valletta (the capital city of Malta) shall be the European Capital of Culture. City of Humanity 1 is set during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 which is one of the most renowned battles of the Renaissance period. As aptly decribed by the French historian Voltaire ‘Nothing is better known than the Great Siege of Malta’.
The libretto is by the veteran Maltese author Gorg Peresso and combines fact and fiction to produce a tale which will capture you from the very beginning to the exhilirating finale.
The music is by the international Maltese composer Reuben Pace and shall be performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. The direction is by Michael Moxham and the set design by Nicky Shaw.
The premier shall take place in Malta’s largest hall – the Republic Hall in the Mediterrenan Conference Centre.
Ticket prices start from €30.
