Orlando works at a printing press, while Marina is an aspiring singer who works as a waitress at a bar. Despite a thirty-year age difference, Marina and Orlando share an intimate and touching relationship. When Orlando falls tragically ill on Marina’s birthday, the couple are torn apart by social pressures. Due to her gender identity as a trans woman, Marina is treated with suspicion by Orlando’s ex-wife, his son and the authorities, who suspect foul play when it comes to his death. A Fantastic Woman explores the trials and tribulations of struggling to be yourself in a world that views difference as an aberration. The character of Marina stands tall in the face of discrimination. In the words of director-writer, Sebastián Lelio (Gloria, 2013), “What will the viewers see when they see Marina? A woman, a man, or the sum of both? They will see a human being who constantly changes before their eyes, who flows, vibrates, and modifies herself.”
