ERA giving away rare Onion Weed and Wild Carrot plants for free in an effort to repopulate the island

This Monday, 18th December the Environment & Resource Authority (ERA) will be giving away two rare plants for free.

These plants are the Onion Weed (il-berwieq iż-żgħir/Asphodelus fistulosus) and the Wild Carrot (iz-zunnarija s-selvaġġa/Daucus carota).

Both plants were once plentiful in both Malta and Gozo but had slowly started to become rarer.

Thus, ERA is doing this in an effort to repopulate the island with these beautiful plants that are slowly disappearing.

You can go over to their offices found at Hexagon House, Spencer Hill, Marsa between 9am and 12pm and collect the plants from there.

The plants were grown by ERA in collaboration with Argotti Botanic Gardens.

In order to make sure that the plants continue thriving ERA posted some instructions on how you should best take care of them.

“Should be placed outdoors in a sunny area, preferably in a spacious pot or directly in the ground. Only water when dry”, they said.

“Blooms in spring and produces seeds in late spring/early summer. During the summer, it is recommended to discard the original plant and sow seeds once again in the subsequent autumn”, the instructions continued.

A great initiative!
