End of an era! Check out this vintage photo of Gozo primary school set to close after 168 years
The building also houses the Gozo Archive.
The National Archives Facebook page recently posted a nostalgic photo of one of Gozo’s most iconic primary schools. After 168 years of nurturing young minds, this Primary School at Triq Vajrinġa in Rabat, Gozo, will close its doors for the last time today.
This historic institution first opened in 1856, marking the beginning of an era dedicated to education in the community. In 1893, an extension was added to the first floor, creating a home for the Public Library, and further solidifying the building's role as a cornerstone of knowledge and learning.
This venerable structure is not just a school but also houses the Gozo Archive, an essential repository of the island's historical documents and records. The closing of the school marks the end of a significant chapter, but it also opens new opportunities as the National Archives hopes for a new home.
While the primary school’s closure is a poignant moment for many, it also heralds a promising future for the Gozo Archive, ensuring that the building continues to be a vital resource for generations to come.
Are you sad to see this building go?
