‘Embit’: Sip through time and discover Malta's wine heritage at the Inquisitor's Palace
Wine lovers rejoice because Heritage Malta and Taste History are coming together to invite wine enthusiasts and history buffs to savour a unique blend of the past and present.
It’s all happening at their upcoming event on the 24th of November at the Inquisitor's Palace in Birgu. The evocative setting of the 18th-century palace provides the backdrop for an evening immersed in Malta's rich wine history. Despite not being renowned for wine production, Malta's historical narrative is steeped in references to Embit, as noted by de Soldanis in his c.1760 Damma.
The event promises a journey through time, exploring archival references to vine cultivation and the island's reliance on imported wines since Roman times.
The centrepiece of the evening is the unveiling of the Inquisitor's bottigliera, a restored and accessible wine cellar within the palace. Attendees will be treated to a curated historic wine pairing, featuring foreign wines and local cheeses selected by food historians and an acclaimed sommelier.
Once deemed essential for diet and even possessing therapeutic and magical properties, the wine will take centre stage, offering a glimpse into its integral role in Maltese history.
The event will start at around 7 pm, ensuring an enchanting evening for those eager to sip, savour, and explore the fascinating tapestry of Malta's wine heritage.
