The Maltese Islands are currently under the influence of a dusty weather pattern, with high humidity levels and grey clouds filling the sky. In addition to the haze, fine desert sand is choking the atmosphere, making the skies appear overcast.

According to Maltese Islands Weather Facebook page, this weather phenomenon, characterised by a gusty South wind, is expected to persist through Friday, 14th March, and Saturday, 15th March. During this period, the concentration of sand in the air will increase, causing the sky to maintain its grey or white appearance despite a decrease in cloud cover.

Such dusty conditions are common in Malta during spring, with these ‘desert episodes’ occurring every year. The frequency and intensity of these dust storms can vary from year to year, but they are a regular part of the Maltese weather cycle. Local residents are accustomed to these episodes, which bring a mixture of haze, humidity, and dust to the island.

This current bout of desert weather is expected to end on Sunday, 16th March, when the wind will shift to a Northwesterly direction and strengthen. While this specific episode will conclude, more dusty weather patterns are anticipated over the coming months as spring continues to unfold.
