Malta was one of the few colonies to receive a good number of red telephone boxes from the Brits.

Back in the day, the telephone booths around our islands used to be used on a daily basis. Nowadays they’re just decorations, landmarks, and awesome Insta spots! It was back in 1800, when Malta voluntarily became part of the British Empire that these red booths began popping up all over the island.
The red telephone box was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and is not only a sight familiar to the UK and Malta but also to Bermuda and Gibraltar, the latter two also being ex-British colonies. Sir Scott originally suggested mild steel as a tone, but the British Post Office chose the colour red to make them easy to spot, especially in case of emergencies. Some have since been turned into internet kiosks or outdoor libraries.
While the British left our islands after Malta became a Republic in 1974, traces of their influence on our country are still very much present, and the famous red telephone booths are one such example. Here are eight spots around the islands you can grab a snapshot in one!
1. Balluta Bay in St Julian's
2. Victoria, Gozo
3. Mdina
4. Rabat
5. Bridge Bar in Valletta
6. Mosta
7. Marsaxlokk
8. Qrendi
