Did you know that the National Library of Malta holds a piece of history written by Marie Antoinette herself? Maltese actor and presenter Antonella Axisa recently came across this extraordinary discovery while filming for the TV programme ‘L-Arkivju tal-Ordni ta’ San Gwann’.

Sharing her amazement on social media, Antonella posted an image of the French queen’s handwriting, expressing her excitement at uncovering such a treasure. ‘This blew my mind,’ she wrote, emphasising that it is just one of many historical gems hidden within the Archives of the Knights of Malta, which are housed in the National Library.

The Archives of the Knights of Malta contain centuries of documents related to the Order of St. John, detailing Malta’s rich and complex past. The fact that Marie Antoinette’s handwriting is among them highlights the deep connections between Malta and European history.

For history enthusiasts and curious minds alike, this discovery is a reminder of the National Library’s invaluable role in preserving rare documents. Who knows what other fascinating stories lie buried within its vast collection?

Have you ever been inside the National Library of Malta?
