Days of old! Decades old photo shows Gozo’s main street in Victoria
The Gozo of many decades ago!

A photo shared by Lars Newton to ‘Old Photos of Malta’ shows a completely yet still recognisable Gozo from the one that exists today.

The photo was taken in what is now referred to as Republic Street in Victoria also known as ‘Triq it-Tigrija’. It is the main street of the town of Victoria and perhaps the busiest street in all of Gozo, home to many shops, restaurants and ongoing traffic.

It seems that many people gathered alongside the road to watch some kind of spectacle or another.

Some speculated that it may have either been the Imnarja celebrations or the Santa Marija horse race that still takes place.

People, mostly men can be seen pushing as far as they can to get to the front.

On the left, one man can even be seen dangling from the balcony so he could get to a higher point.

Sweet nostalgia!
