Caught on camera! Check out these photos of Gozo’s Dwejra Bay acting as a backdrop in a 1950s war film
The film was called ‘Single-Handed’ and it was based on C.S. Forester’s novel ‘Brown on Resolution’.
The Dwejra Tower Facebook page took us on a nostalgic journey by posting some interesting aerial photos dating back to the mid-20th century. These stunning snapshots, likely captured by Royal Navy Photographers between 1955-57, offer a glimpse into a remarkable naval feat at Dwejra Bay in Gozo.
Ric Smith, shared these treasures with the Dwejra Tower team, recounting the tale of his father, David, the Navigator aboard HMS Surprise. In an intriguing exchange with the Commander-in-Chief, David was asked if they could navigate the warship into Dwejra Bay. With confidence, David replied affirmatively, only to later learn that this wasn't the first such occurrence.
In 1952/53, HMS Manxman, disguised as the German raider 'Essen,' sailed into Dwejra Bay for the filming of 'Single-Handed.' The movie, based on C.S. Forester's novel 'Brown on Resolution,' transported the action to WWII.
The film's uniqueness lies in being the first American production shot on authentic British naval ships, including HMS Manxman. The scenes of the disguised cruiser, with enlarged funnels and painted torpedo damage, unfolded against the picturesque backdrop of Dwejra Bay, creating a cinematic legacy that will always be remembered in the island's maritime history.
