Behind the scenes! Preventive conservation of Mazzuoli's 'Baptism of Christ' at St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta
The conservation of such statues is an art in itself!

Francesca Vella

The marble statue named ‘Baptism of Christ’ by Giuseppe Mazzuoli at St John’s Co-Cathedral is getting some preventive conservation done, in the form of dusting.

This is not as simple a process as it sounds - particular attention is essential to ensure the identification and recording of any changes or damages to the sculpture.

The dusting process is carried out twice a year using soft-bristled brushes and a vacuum cleaner.

The sculptor Giuseppe Mazzuoli made other works that reside in St John’s Co-Cathedral, namely the main altar which he finished in 1703, as well as allegorical figures for the tomb of Ramon Perellos y Roccaful, who was the Grand Master of the Order of Malta and died in 1720.

Have you ever seen ‘Baptism of Christ’ at St John’s?
