Before and after! Isla painting in honour of the victims of the Great Siege and WWII fully restored
The painting is the work of Maltese artist, Emvin Cremona.
Maltese restoration and conservation company, ReCoop have just finished restoring another part of Maltese heritage. They have given life yet again to a painting found in the Basilica of Marija Bambina in Isla.
The painting depicts Our Lady of Rosary together with baby Jesus as she is surrounded by St Dominic and St Catherina of Siena.
But this painting is extra special as a female figure can be observed on her knees holding a lifeless body. This was done in order honour and represent all the Maltese victims of the Great Siege of 1565 and World War II.
This stunning work of art was painted by Emvin Cremona in 1957 after he was commissioned to do so by Monsignor Emmanuel Galea.
Emvin Cremona was a renowned Maltese artist in the 20th century, known for creating a balance between traditional and modern elements. Such a characteristic can clearly be seen in this recently restored painting.
The painting is now looking much a better after it received an extensive removal of the layers of dirt and atmospheric deposits it had accumulated.
