Beautiful bloom! Did you know that the Mediterranean Thyme is a vital pollinator plant in Malta?
This plant is locally known as is-Sagħtar.
It’s that time of the month when Dwejra Tower announces their featured plant of the month. This time, the page is shining the spotlight on the Mediterranean Thyme (Thymus capitatus), known locally as is-Sagħtar.
This aromatic shrub, native to the Mediterranean region, thrives in the rocky areas and garrigue habitats of the Maltese Islands, blooming beautifully in late spring and summer.
Mediterranean Thyme is a low-growing, woody plant with clusters of fleshy leaves covered in rough hairs and dotted with glands that emit its distinctive fragrance. The plant's charming pink and violet flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including honeybees and native butterflies, making it a vital food source for these species.
Highlighting its ecological importance, Dwejra Tower emphasises the need to protect this plant, encouraging people to "Leave it for the bees!" As a legally protected species under Maltese law (S.L. 549.44), the collection, removal, or harvesting of Mediterranean Thyme is strictly prohibited.
