St Paul's Catacombs comprises an extensive burial ground, which in the fourth century after Christ was just outside the defunct town of Melite, established in line with Roman law which prohibited burials within the urban footprint. The site consists of two tracts littered with hypogea, of which the main complex comprises a labyrinthine network of interconnecting passages and tombs.
