Attention drivers! Slippery road conditions in Malta caused by high humidity
Careful while driving!

Francesca Vella

Many woke up this morning puzzled by wet roads, despite no apparent rainfall overnight. Maltese Islands Weather shed light on this phenomenon, explaining that it’s caused by a few drops of rain falling in extremely humid conditions, as the islands have been experiencing in recent days. This led to up to 0.4 mm of precipitation in some areas.

Unfortunately, this minimal rain mixes with accumulated dust on the roads - present due to the recent lack of heavy rainfall - forming a slippery layer of sludge. This creates a hazardous barrier between vehicle tyres and the road, making conditions especially dangerous for drivers who may not realise the risk due to the absence of visible rainfall.

While the likelihood of rain remains low until the weekend, humidity levels are still high, averaging around 85%, so make sure to remain cautious and drive extra carefully under these conditions.

Have you noticed the particularly high humidity lately?
