An oasis of serenity! Peace Lab Gardens in Hal-Far bloom again after regeneration project
A peaceful garden now stands in the very same spot that played a central role in the Second World War
The Peace Lab, a voluntary organisation founded by Fr Dionysius Mintoff, focuses on adult education through radio programmes and newspapers centred around justice and human rights. Its headquarters are situated in Hal-Far, on a site that once served as an airfield during the Second World War. Recently, the surrounding gardens have undergone a regeneration project, breathing new life into the space.

This initiative marks the realisation of one of Fr Dionysius Mintoff’s dreams, made possible with the support of Project Green. The 2,000 square metres of gardens have been transformed into a serene oasis, providing a peaceful escape after decades of wartime history that the area previously saw.
Fr Mintoff expressed his hope that more people will visit the gardens, saying, 'The aim is also for people to remember that leisure time is important. Nature is a big book, and it’s always speaking to you.'

The regeneration works include the installation of low bridges, the widening of pathways for improved accessibility, and the preservation of the site’s existing biodiversity. A new lighting system has been installed to create a more relaxing atmosphere, enhancing safety and visitor experience.
Additionally, numerous trees and shrubs were planted, and children’s play equipment made from recyclable materials was set up. Picnic benches and other amenities have been added to make the garden more community-focused and recreational.
If you’re seeking a tranquil spot in nature while exploring the south of Malta, this could be the perfect destination!
