Way back in September 1987, Malta saw a historic football match between Valletta FC and Juventus.

Capturing the historic game in a black and white photo, the Malta and International Football Collection Facebook page shared the memory of a football match being played in The National Stadium – Ta’ Qali, in sweltering heat.

Kicking off at 2:30pm with an audience of 15,000 supporters, Valletta FC lost with a score of 0-4.

Tickets for the match were on sale from the week before and could be bought from Ta’ Gelardu Kiosk in Valletta.

These were priced “at Lm8 for reserved seats, Lm5 enclosure, Lm2 ground, whereas boys (ground only) paid 50 cents.”

Under coach Tony Formosa and Assistant Coach Joe Micallef, the Valletta FC players of the match were Ray Mifsud, Ray Briffa, Pawlu Curmi, Frans Grioli, Kris Laferla, Dennis Fenech, Melchior Cremona, Nicky Saliba, Joe Camilleri, Jesmond Zerafa and Michael Taliana.

On the other hand, Juventus players present on the day were Stefano Tacconi, Luciano Favero, Antonio Cabrini, Massimo Bonini, Sergio Brio, Roberto Tricella, Massimo Mauro, Marino Magrin, Angelo Alessio, Luigi De Agostini and Michael Laudrup.

The Juventus coach at the time was Rino Marchesi.

The team travelled to the islands with AirMalta on Tuesday 15th September.

In addition, 11 club officials came to Malta to acompany the team. This included club President Giampiero Boniperti, who came to Malta for the first time. In addition, 40 Italian journalists visited with the group.
