A remarkable moment in time!

A recently shared throwback photo on the National Archives Facebook group has stirred waves of nostalgia among its members.

The image captures a remarkable moment in time - the Portes Des Bombes in Floriana before its transformation with the construction of a second archway in 1868 designed by Colonel E.W. Dunford.

Portes des Bombes, built in 1721 was originally one archway. In 1868, a second archway was added to accommodate the increasing traffic in the Grand Harbour area. The below photo from the National Archives shows some of the plans that were prepared by the Royal Engineers.

The historical significance of this location is undeniable, and this glimpse into its past is a precious moment. The ornamentation in the archways was removed to enable trams to pass through the gate when operations started in 1905.

The Facebook page also shared another throwback photos of Portes Des Bombes, featuring another gate in front of it.

These photographs transport viewers back to a simpler era when Malta was a different place altogether. The single archway of the Portes Des Bombes stands proudly, serving as a gateway to history itself.

It's a reminder of the architectural marvels of the past and a look at the island's rich heritage.
