Pierre Farrugia, a local explorer and adventurer, took on an intriguing journey to uncover the hidden wonders of Wied Iz-Zurrieq, also known as Wied Hoxt, a stunning natural gem situated within the borders of Qrendi rather than Zurrieq, as commonly believed.

His expedition aimed to journey the picturesque landscape from the mouth of Wied Iz-Zurrieq to the road above, offering a unique perspective on this lesser-known corner of Malta.

Wied iz-Zurrieq

Setting out from Wied Iz-Zurrieq's opening into the sea, Pierre's path led him first to a notable World War II pillbox, affectionately known as il-Kamra it-Tonda. Continuing inland, he encountered Id-Dikkiena, where concrete steps once welcomed swimmers to its tranquil waters.

Navigating along a narrow ledge hugging the coastline, Pierre found himself close to a pebble beach situated within the cliffs. To access this hidden oasis, he faced the choice of either a daring swim or a challenging ascent followed by a precarious descent.

Wied iz-Zurrieq

As he ascended, Pierre stumbled upon a set of concrete-enclosed stairs, a relic transformed into an air raid shelter during wartime—a testament to the valley's storied past.

Descending to the pebble beach required careful navigation through rugged terrain, yet the breathtaking beauty of Wied Iz-Zurrieq's secluded shores made the arduous journey worthwhile.

Though Pierre's exploration of the valley's interior proved impassable due to dense vegetation, the ascent back to the road rewarded him with awe-inspiring panoramas—a testament to the resilience and beauty of Malta's natural landscape.

In the end, Pierre emerged triumphant, enriched by his expedition's challenges and rewarded with a newfound appreciation for the hidden treasures within Wied Iz-Zurrieq's rugged terrain.

Have you ever taken this Wied iz-Zurrieq journey yourself?
