A rare glimpse! Check out this devastating photo of Teatru Rjal’s fiery fate during World War II in Malta
The Teatru Rjal suffered two major disasters; one in 1879 and the second during World War II.
Recently, a nostalgic photo surfaced online, resurrecting memories of a tragic event from Malta's history. The photo captured the Teatru Rjal engulfed in flames during the Second World War. The iconic theatre, also known as The Royal Opera House, situated in Valletta, served as a cultural haven for the Maltese people before its untimely demise.
Built in 1861, and designed by the English architect Edward Middleton Barry, the theatre witnessed countless theatrical masterpieces, orchestral concerts, and ballet performances.
During the war, Malta endured relentless bombings, and sadly, the Teatru Rjal became a casualty of the conflict and suffered two devastating blows. The first fire happened in 1879 and it destroyed its interior and resulted in it having to be rebuilt.
The second happened due to a severe bombardment during the Second World War, after which very little of the structure remained.
The theatre was then reconstructed in the 21st century and the Teatru Rjal opened its doors again in 2013. It has been an entertainment hotspot ever since.
The nostalgic photo encapsulates a chapter of Malta's history that will forever be etched in the hearts of its people.
