A powerful dance performance immortalising Frida Kahlo's resilience at Pjazza Teatru Rjal
It’s all happening on the 9th and 10th of June.
Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist is remembered for her self-portraits, clearly exhibiting her pain and passion through bold and vibrant colours. She is also heavily celebrated for her depiction of the female experience and form.
Frida: My Two Accidents is an evocative contemporary dance performance by Moveo Dance Company, choreographed by Diane Portelli. Happening on the 9th and 10th of June at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, the performance delves into the extraordinary strength of Frida Kahlo amidst life's tragedies.
Renowned for her art and distinctive appearance, Frida faced immense pain during her short-lived life. Despite this, her body of work remains a timeless testament to her legacy. Influential in the realm of Surrealism, Frida Kahlo's emotionally charged self-portraits captivate with intricate details. This dance production draws inspiration from her iconic painting, The Broken Column.

Director and choreographer Diane Portelli was deeply moved by this painting, Frida’s split body revealing a crumbling column instead of a spinal cord. Despite enduring a broken body and heart, the artist exhibited immense emotional strength.
"I was fascinated by the contrast of beauty and horror in that painting’’, says Diane. ‘’It sparked the idea of exploring her duality."
The performance also delves into Frida's tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera, her on-again-off-again husband. She famously stated that she had endured two major accidents in her life; her tragic accident and her relationship with her husband. The latter was much worse, according to the artist.
“Nothing was straightforward with Frida, which makes her life story so relatable and timeless. Her relationship with Diego was filled with as much turmoil as it was passionate. Our show will feature Kahlo herself, her sister Christina, and Diego. Both Diego and Christina were pivotal to her life story, especially because their affair caused Frida great anguish, which is one of the themes tackled in the performance.”

The dancers will embody various significant roles, portraying her suffering, her miscarriages, the brushstrokes of her paintings, and the Mexican people fuelling the revolution. Frida endured 32 excruciating surgeries and faced the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages.
The performance also pays homage to the artist's pride in her Mexican heritage, emphasising her choice to wear traditional Tehuana dresses as a political statement. These elements are captured through costume design by Ritianne Zammit and original music composed by Albert Garzia.
After receiving critical acclaim in 2022, Frida: My Two Accidents is set to return this year by popular demand. Don't miss the opportunity to witness this awe-inspiring performance at Pjazza Teatru Rjal on June 9th and 10th.
