A legacy in fabric! AFM shares images showing the evolution of Malta's military uniforms
The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have recently taken a fascinating trip down memory lane, sharing a visual timeline of their uniforms through the decades. From formal military attire of the past to today’s functional and tactical gear, these images are a testament to how AFM uniforms have evolved to meet the needs of the times, technology, and operational demands.
The collection not only shows changes in fabric and design but also reflects Malta’s rich military heritage. The transformation of AFM uniforms tells the story of the island’s shifting defence forces – beginning with Malta’s role under British rule, transitioning through independence in 1964, and the formation of the Malta Land Force, before officially becoming the Armed Forces of Malta in the 1980s.
One of the earliest uniforms featured dates back to 1970, belonging to a Territorial Infantry Soldier of the 1st Battalion KOMR – short for the King's Own Malta Regiment. This regiment, part of the British Army colonial list, was responsible for defending Malta before its disbandment following independence. By the 1970s, post-KOMR uniforms had already changed, adapting to Malta’s newly established defence force.
Moving into the 1980s and beyond, the images show a clear shift towards practicality, with the introduction of camouflage and combat-ready materials, replacing the more formal attire of earlier years. This transition reflects not just changes in fashion but also the evolution of military strategies and the needs of modern defence forces.
It’s incredible to see how something as simple as a uniform can tell such a rich and complex story about Malta’s history.
