A hidden gem in Floriana! The Herbert Ganado Garden blends history, tranquility, and wartime legacy
The garden's history is closely linked to the events of World War II.

Herbert Ganado Garden, originally known as Kalkara Garden, is a small yet historically significant terraced garden located in Floriana, Malta. Its former name comes from the nearby Kalkara Gate, one of the entrances to the Floriana fortifications.

Perched on the edge of the Grand Harbour, the garden offers stunning views of one of Malta’s most iconic landscapes, making it a peaceful retreat for visitors.

The garden's history is closely linked to the events of World War II, when Malta was heavily bombarded due to its strategic location. During the war, shelters were constructed within the garden to house members of the English military services. These shelters provided crucial protection and accommodation during a time of intense conflict, transforming the serene garden into a vital wartime refuge.

After the war, the garden was renamed in honour of Herbert Ganado, a prominent Maltese lawyer, politician, and author who played a significant role in Malta’s history. Ganado’s contributions to Maltese society, particularly in advocating for the rights of the Maltese people, are commemorated through the garden's name.

Today, Herbert Ganado Garden serves as a place of relaxation, offering a tranquil space for both locals and tourists. Its historical legacy, coupled with its breathtaking views, makes it a unique landmark, blending Malta’s natural beauty with its rich wartime history.

Have you ever visited these gardens?
