The National Archives of Malta recently treated history enthusiasts on their social media page to a delightful blast from the past with an interesting throwback photo. The image, dating back to the 1950s, offers a glimpse into Malta's historical ties with the British military services.

In the photograph, a Royal Navy bus takes centre stage, showcasing the unique public transportation system of the time. Interestingly, all three British military services in Malta—the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, and the British Army—operated their own specific buses.

Notably, the image hints at the resourcefulness of the era, as the Bedford SB, used by the Royal Navy was likely refurbished and re-bodied locally after approximately a decade of service, finding a new life as a route bus.

The photo also intrigues with the presence of a uniformed gentleman by the bus, who appears to be Maltese.

In fact, The National Archives of Malta calls on anyone with information about the Services' buses and their personnel to come forward and share their insights, shedding more light on this fascinating chapter of Malta's history.

Do you recognise the mystery man on the bus?
