A dose of nostalgia! 1985 newspaper clipping shows schedule of films showing in Malta’s cinemas
Do you remember the cinema dedicated section in newspapers?

Emma Galea

The person behind ‘Cinema Heritage Group’ has shared quite the nostalgic newspaper clipping, taking group members back to a time when one would need the newspaper to know what's on at the cinema!

While exploring the underground of the Gharghur battery, a piece of newspaper was discovered, which depicted the ‘In the cinema today’ piece of the newspaper dating back to the year 1985! The paper shows the films being shown in various cinemas across Malta.

For instance, three different showings were going to be held for ‘Where the Boys are’ at the Embassy Cinema in Valletta, a cinema which still exists today - albeit using quite different technology than in the 80s!

‘The Honorary Consul’ was also showing at the Alhambra in Sliema - one that has sadly closed since then, and stood at the corner where Zara clothes shop is found today.

Many cinema and film enthusiasts would often flip through the newspapers so they can go ahead and plan their next visit to their local cinema - quite a bit more effort than the quick scroll and tap that characterises today's cinema booking experience!

Which of the films listed would you have chosen back then?
