8 al fresco eateries to try in Malta
There really is nothing like a leisurely meal outdoors on a warm summer evening.

With its year-round mild weather and our penchant for good food at all times, it’s no surprise that Malta boasts a wealth of eateries with an outdoor area for al fresco dining. Whether you’re strolling around the capital or looking for a bite to eat at the water’s edge, chances are that a great spot isn’t far off, and while it’s impossible to list them all (and we won’t try!), here are a few of our favourite al fresco eateries to try in Malta.

1. Giuseppi’s Bar & Bistro

A personal favourite that never disappoints is Giuseppi’s at Salina (near St Paul’s Bay). Chef Patron Michael Diacono is a legend in the local food world, and his upmarket menu is further complemented by the décor of the place. Apart from the stylish interior, the restaurant boasts a large terrace overlooking Salina Bay, and is perfect for those long, summer lunches in the sun.

2. Café Teatro

Set within the iconic Pjazza Teatru Rjal, an open-air theatre designed within the ruins of the Royal Opera House in Valletta, Café Teatro, overlooking the bustling Freedom Square, is one of those stylish places to see and be seen in Valletta. While you can take your pick from the options on the food menu, many flock here to watch the crowds throng in and out of Valletta with a cocktail in hand as the sun goes down.

3. Fat Louie’s

If you’ve come across this eatery on social media, you’re no stranger to the hunger-inducing food-porn that takes place here – despite its small size, this place really packs a punch. Located within the entertainment hub of Paceville, this smokehouse boasts a cool terrace, which is perfect for a bite to eat and a spot of people watching in the warm months.

4. De Robertis

De Robertis rooftop restaurant at the Castille Hotel is a Valletta stalwart, and has built a name for itself over the years thanks to its refined fusion cuisine with Italian, Mediterranean, French and local influences. The piece de resistance however has got to be the spectacular views of Valletta and The Grand Harbour.

5. Marina Club VW

Down by the water’s edge, the Marina Club at the iconic Valletta Waterfront is another al fresco eatery that’s certainly worth a visit. The steaks here are to die for, and as the sun sets on a glorious summer day, there really is nothing better than sitting back with a cocktail (or two – happy hour is between 5pm and 7pm), and relax as you watch the world go by.

6. City Lounge

Another Valletta hotspot with a spacious terrace overlooking the fantastic St George’s square is City Lounge. Take in the views of the Grandmaster’s Palace across the square and the bustling streets below as you peruse the menu which, despite being a steak house, also features a selection of pasta, salads and fish.

7. The Galley

This seaside restaurant located next to The Royal Malta Yacht Club in Ta' Xbiex offers idyllic views of Marsamxett harbour from its terrace, and makes for another perfect spot to enjoy a long lunch or dinner al fresco in the summer months. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and the menu offers everything from premium meat and seasonal fish to pasta dishes, pizza and light snacks.

8. Buffalo Bill's Steak House

Set within the luxurious Portomaso development in St Julian’s, this steak house enjoys fabulous marina views, which means you can play spot the yacht while tucking into a delicious steak dinner. With an all-you-can-eat salad bar and selection of tantalising steaks to choose from, it’s a great option at the weekend, followed by a night on the town at the nearby entertainment district of Paceville.
