7,000 years of history in 45 minutes!
Immerse yourself in an audio-visual treat for the senses at the Malta Experience in Valletta

Edward Bonello

When Grand Master de Valette decided to build his administrative capital on what was then a barren hill, he probably had no idea it would become the unique, thriving city it is today. Certainly, he didn’t foresee Malta becoming the touristic destination it is now – attracting upward of two million tourists yearly.

Who would have thought that de Valette, and so many other important characters from Malta’s history would fascinate and intrigue, so many years into the future?

It is exactly what happens every hour, on the hour at the immensely popular Malta Experience in Valletta, which has been entertaining and teaching tourists and locals alike, about Malta’s fascinating history since the 80s.

“For us, Malta Experience is a way of showcasing, in an easy-to-consume format, all the detail and colour of our history. Through our audio-visual show, which is available in 17 different languages, our guests learn about 7,000 years of history of Malta, from the very early stone-age civilisations, right up to our current times,” David Pace Lupi explains.

In fact, Malta Experience takes audiences for a breath-taking ride across an unbelievable 7,000 years of history. From the temple-builders who built the oldest freestanding buildings in the world, followed by the master-seamen Phoenicians, the Law-making Romans, and the Middle Ages, to the many powers that ruled Malta in a relatively short period of time, this audiovisual spectacle is jam-packed with historical gems. Of particular interest are the Knights of St John who regaled the island with the magnificent buildings and churches the Maltese are so proud of, as well as the Brits whose cultural stamp remains so relevant today.

“We suggest guests pay us a visit as soon as they arrive in Malta. Our show provides enough detail to explain so many things that would otherwise go lost in the pretty scenery. They would understand where our odd language comes from, why we can’t stop talking about the Great Siege of 1565, why Valletta was so important for the Knights, and perhaps even some of our customs,” Mr Pace Lupi continues.

Malta Experience employs Full HD laser projectors to create an immersive cinematic experience. Moreover, using individual headsets for each member of the audience, the show can be viewed in 17 different languages, so absolutely no one is left staring at the ceiling! The expertly translated text and professionally produced voice-overs take all visitors by the hand through the exiting journey.

Malta Experience lends itself perfectly to any kind of stay in Malta, be it a long leisurely break or a swift weekend get-away. Located centrally in Valletta, it is the perfect first stop in visiting the capital and providing all the context needed to really take in all the beauty and particularities of the country.

For history buffs who wish to take in even more, they can extend their experience with a 30-minute guided tour in English, exploring the Sacra Infermeria next door. And if all the history gets guests peckish, they need not fear as St Elmo’s Kitchen comes to the rescue. In fact, the on-site restaurant offers a full Mediterranean menu including some mouth-watering Maltese delights.

The Malta Experience is open every day of the year, except for Christmas, New Year's Day, and Easter Sunday, with shows scheduled every hour on the hour. For more information, and bookings visit https://themaltaexperience.com/
