6 hidden green gems in Malta
Malta may be a largely arid island, but the roundabouts aren't the only green bits!

Chinese Garden of Serenity, Santa Lucija
It's more serene than green, but this garden, executed under the China Aid program between the Republic of Malta and The People's Republic of China, is made up of four small gardens, with an intricately crafted layout that symbolises the entire journey we travel through from birth to death, embracing the Yin and Yang philosophy. You can wander around the grounds, taking in the striking colours, adorned architecture, and the mesmerising sound of water and birds. Not bad for a pocket in the middle of an urban area.

Royal Malta Golf Club, Marsa
It's an expensive way to walk on grass, but if you happen to love the game of golf, this is the perfect spot. Hidden within the industrial area of Marsa, you would never imagine such an expanse of green existed. Established in 1888, the course offers 18 holes of golf in maintained-daily historical and landscaped grounds.

Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar
Also known as the best spot for a ladies' lunch, this magnificent walled palatial garden is hidden in the centre of Naxxar. Classically Baroque in style, the gardens are a charming mixture of Italian symmetry and Mediterranean colour and perfumes. Apart from the twisting paths through the orange grove, and the flowering trees amongst unusual shrubs, there's the lovely Luna Restaurant. Here you can take in the manicured entrance to the garden while enjoying a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Buskett Woodlands
Some parts look like they've come right out of a fairy tale, while there are concealed nooks which could be from The Secret Garden. There are so many trees and fauna that it's the perfect place to find a cool, shady spot to contemplate. It's also surprisingly undisturbed - even in summer - making it easy to completely wind down and take all the nature in.

San Anton Gardens, Attard
This shady spot in Attard surrounds the striking Presidential Palace and offers lots of space, huge mature trees, beautiful fountains, ponds with ducks and swans, and benches to relax. Open to the public since 1882, the garden has several walkways that take you through the lush, green gardens.

Msida Bastion Historic Garden, Floriana
Located on the Floriana bastions, this garden served as a Protestant cemetery from 1806-56, and was restored over a period of 10 years, with the addition of a small museum in 2004. While the principal occupants are British servicemen, officials and businessmen and their families, the most famous Maltese buried here was Mikiel Anton Vassalli, known as the father of the Maltese language. The garden is open to visitors on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and the first Sundays of the month, from 9:30am till noon.
