5 favourite snacks for schoolchildren with a Maltese twist
Snacks that kids know and love!

Jillian Mallia

1. Twistees

An obvious choice for any Maltese kid out there. Be it your own personal nibble packet or one to share with friends, it is the perfect choice for a school snack. Available in different flavours, Twistees is now also a gluten free product, also ideal for a gluten-intolerant child wanting a little flavour in their lunch box!

2. Oatmeal cookies

Cookies. Need we say more? Instead of the high-sugar and high-fat store-bought cookies however, why not try a homemade batch of oatmeal cookies? Any topping can be added to them - think cranberries, chocolate, nuts or dried fruit. It’s an interesting and tasty way of combining nutrients in the delicious form of a cookie.

3. Ottijiet

This traditional biscuit incorporates sesame seeds, cloves and aniseed, and is shaped in figures of eight, hence it's name, derived from the Italian word otto, meaning eight. These short crust based cookies are perfect for children's short breaks and a great grab-and-go snack.

4. Hummus and veggie sticks with galletti

Filled with vitamins and minerals, this fun snack has an appealing nutty flavour that is complemented with veggie sticks (you can choose bell peppers, carrots, celery or cucumber) combined with the traditional, crunchy galletti that tickle every child's taste buds!

5. Cheese and fruit kebabs

A different way to give kids their five-a-day! Differently shaped pieces of cheese and fruit on a kebab stick is an enticing way for children to get a bit of protein and their five-a-day. Variations of kebabs could include strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and grapes (easily pierced with a kebab stick) and star or heart shaped low-fat Edam cheese and Red Leicester cheese to make things pop! And if you want to give things a local flavour, why not try the old favourite, tomatoes and gbejna? They're a winning combination!
