Know your Peking Duck from your Sichuan prawns? Well, don’t we have a treat for you!
Sushi may be the Asian food of the day, but what if you’re just not into raw fish? What if you just want a hearty meal of noodles, rice and succulent meats? These Chinese restaurants on the islands of Malta and Gozo will have you returning to try everything on their menu. Wherever you choose, however, make sure to book!
1. The Oriental Garden, Marsascala
Ever-popular, this eatery in the south of the island aims to bring the diversity of Chinese cuisine to this Mediterranean isle, with dishes inspired from the country’s diverse regions. The vast menu offers everything you can imagine it would. From the ubiquitous spring roles and crispy wantons, to the less-seen Szechucan eggplant and mussels in oyster sauce, this place will definitely have what you fancy – whatever your mood!
2. TemptAsian in The Palace, Sliema
While not strictly Chinese – but more of an amalgamation of everything Asian – this place is perfect if you just want a little taste of all the diverse regions of the continent. Temptasian is one of the fancier kids on the-already-fancy block, situated on the stunning top floor of The Palace, with views of Marsamxett Harbour and Valletta. It may be on the pricier side, but the view alone is worth the extra charge. Offering both an a la carte or set menu option, featuring Chinese favourites such as Peking duck and Yao Guo Ji (stir fry chicken with spring onions, coloured peppers and cashews nuts), this is a place you won’t want to leave in a hurry.
3. Rickshaw in the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa, Attard
This stalwart of Asian cuisine on the islands has remained consistently at the top of its game for decades. Situated in the grand Corinthia Palace Hotel and Spa in Attard, this place has class written all over it. The menu changes quite regularly, with imaginative dishes constantly being added to their repertoire. Try the Cantonese style oysters, which are steamed with spring onions and ginger, as well as the spicy prawns Sichuan (stir fried king prawns with garlic ginger and red chillies) for a taste of Chinese luxury.
4. Peking Restaurant, Bugibba
One of the first Chinese restaurants to open on the island, Peking has not waned in popularity since it threw its doors open in the ‘80s. It was refurbished in 2009, updating the look for the new millennium, but retaining it’s ever-popular flavour. The dishes include perennial favourites such as chicken sweetcorn soup and beef in black bean sauce, so you won’t need to look far for old friends.
5. Shaukiwan Chinese Restaurant, Xemxija
Shaukiwan Chinese Restaurant offers both a la carte and buffet options, making it a favourite with diners from the area or further afield. Regulars praise its fresh produce and consistent service, as well as its excellent value for money. Though the a la carte menu may not be as vast as some of the other restaurants on the island, less is more in terms of taste and quality.
