3.4 million passengers arrived at Malta’s International Airport during the first half of 2023
This surpasses 2019’s highs by 5.6%.
Malta International Airport received 3.43 million passengers for the first half of 2023, surpassing 2019 highs by 5.6%. This statistic also put Malta’s airport among 48% of European airports whose mid-year passenger volumes exceeded pre-pandemic traffic.
Malta’s airport also registered buoyant monthly seat load factors that peaked in June at 86% and outperformed levels that were set both for 2019 and 2022.
These results indicate that the appetite for travel to the Maltese Islands has not waned despite challenging macroeconomics. In fact, this year’s traffic performance has translated into record results in tourism numbers making Malta a tourism appeal.

During a press conference, it was also revealed that Malta International Airport’s capital expenditure for the first six months amounted to approximately €8 million as works on several projects around the terminal and the airfield continued.
While works are still ongoing on Apron X for the first three aircraft parking stands to be in operation by summer 2024, the last quarter of the year will see the start of the extensive rehabilitation of Runway 23-05.
Concurrently, the company will kick-start works that include a 1,550 square metre westward expansion for the introduction of an additional arrivals route leading to the baggage reclaim area and the addition of two baggage reclaim belts.
