No traffic lights, no problem! Photo from the early 20th century shows police officer directing traffic in Floriana
Different times…

A photo shared onto Pinterest by Joann Barile, as a courtesy of Jospeh Borda, shows quite an unusual scene taking place in Floriana.

The photo was taken some time in the first half of the 20th century but back then no traffic lights existed near the Portes de Bombes (Bieb il-Bombi).

Nonetheless, traffic still needed to be controlled as even though cars were far less common back then, there were still many coming in and out of Floriana and Valletta.

Therefore, a policeman had to be stationed there every day in order to bring order and ensure safety while directing traffic.

As can be seen from the photo, a small elevated platform was set up with an umbrella for protection as the policeman stood there and used his hands to direct all oncoming traffic.
