What an achievement! Malta ranks 4th globally in the Environmental Performance Index
This award demonstrates the island’s ever-growing commitment to sustainability

Malta has achieved an outstanding global ranking of 4th out of 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), according to the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy. This incredible news was posted on social media by Zibel, a well-known NGO which aims to reduce the overall waste generation in Malta.

With an impressive EPI score of 75.20, Malta is demonstrating its dedication to sustainability and environmental well-being. This remarkable achievement reflects the country's commitment to protecting the environment and promoting a greener future.

The EPI evaluates countries based on two key indicators: Environmental Health and Ecosystem Vitality. Environmental Health takes into account factors such as air quality, water sanitation, and their impact on human well-being. Ecosystem Vitality, on the other hand, assesses biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and sustainable agriculture to promote ecosystem health and sustainability. Malta's high ranking in both categories demonstrates its comprehensive approach to environmental conservation.

Over the past decade, Malta has made significant progress in environmental performance, as indicated by a notable 25.40-point increase in its EPI score. This positive trend reflects the successful implementation of policies aimed at protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.

However, it is essential to view these achievements with a realistic perspective. In fact, Zibel end their post on social media by saying,

‘We feel this should be taken with a pinch of salt. Whilst this does not mean we have achieved our goals; these studies highlight the importance of ongoing efforts and further measures to sustain and enhance our environmental standing. Let's keep reinforcing our commitment to a greener future!’
