Wetter days and warmer nights: Here's a look back at Malta’s weather in 2025
631.5mm of rain made 2025 the wettest year since 2012.

If 2025 felt a little warmer and noticeably wetter, you weren’t imagining it! According to the latest climate data published by Maltese Islands Weather, the year closed at 0.4°C above the long-term average, with both daytime highs and nighttime lows exceeding the norm. Mean maximum temperatures were up by 0.6°C, while mean minimum temperatures climbed by 0.5°C.

Half of the year recorded warmer-than-average conditions, while four of the remaining months stayed close to the seasonal norm. Only two months dipped noticeably below average temperatures, offering brief cooler breaks in what was largely a mild year.

Interestingly, the months that hovered closest to the climate norm were spread across late summer and throughout autumn, as atmospheric instability towards the end of summer contributed to a cooler, more unsettled period later in the year.

In a clear break from the drier patterns of recent years, 2025 brought more rain than expected – and plenty of it! Eight months registered above-average precipitation, with one month falling exactly in line with the norm. Only January, August and November were drier than usual.

With a total of 631.5mm of rainfall, 2025 became the first wetter-than-average year since 2021 and the wettest year since 2012. A strong late winter and an unusually long, rainy spring set the tone, with wet conditions stretching right up to the start of summer.

Autumn told two different stories across the islands. While Malta largely missed out on heavy rainfall during the season, Gozo experienced repeated downpours. In fact, stormy weather bypassed Gozo only in November.

One standout event occurred on 24th September, when isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms drenched Gozo with a whopping 60.4mm of rain in just 24 hours – the highest daily total recorded all year.

December also made headlines, becoming the first December in eleven years to record above-average rainfall, thanks to frequent rainy days throughout the month.

The start of 2026 has already brought some history-book-worthy moments from the skies (Storm Harry, we’re looking at you!) and we’re just two months in – stay tuned!

What kind of spring are you hoping for this year?
