WATCH: Maltese ultra-endurance swimmer, Neil Agius embarks on groundbreaking 100-mile swim to break records
Neil left Mallorca this morning and hopes to swim to Ibiza in around three days.
Neil Agius, the ultra-endurance swimmer, has officially begun his epic 100-mile swim, which he hopes to complete in record time. This morning, Neil left Mallorca and he is anticipated to land in Ibiza in around three days.
With 10 months of planning and training, Neil took off in the best of moods for the world's first attempt to break the record for the longest uninterrupted, current-neutral, open-water sea swim.
By the time this challenge is over, Neil would have covered the incredible distance of 160 kilometres, all for a cause that supports a healthier environment.
A 12-hour countdown started last night immediately after Neil said that his phone had been given to his team so they could handle updates, ensuring that he is well-prepared for the task both physically and mentally.
The former Olympian plans to use the swim to raise awareness and support lobbying efforts to encourage governments to ratify and properly implement the United Nations Treaty of the High Seas, which was adopted in New York on June 19 and creates tools for area-based management of ocean preservation.
Neil also collaborates with the local non-profit Wave of Change Malta to urge people to accept change and increase local awareness of pollution and plastic trash.
Good luck Neil! We’re sure you’ll make us all proud!
