WATCH: Harmless fried egg jellyfish spotted once again in Maltese waters
They’re known as ‘qassata’ jellyfish in Maltese.

Emma Galea

The fried egg jellyfish otherwise known as il-qassata in Maltese, have made their annual return to Malta.

These jellyfish that resemble a fried egg or a qassata, hence their name, are largely innocuous and therefore harmless.

You can swim alongside them without a single worry they will harm or sting you. There is no need to collect them from the sea as you’ll be depriving these beautiful creatures from life for nothing.

They are also sometimes referred to as tal-lampuki as they start showing up right around the time when lampuki season opens here in Malta. The season opens every year on the 15th August, on the same day Malta celebrates the Assumption of Saint Mary.

Have you spotted one yet?
