We’ve had Troy, Gladiator, Munich, and Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea. It’s no surprise that Malta has been listed as one of the world’s most popular filming locations, placing 81st in a ranking created by travel website GoCompare.com.

Fort St Elmo, the shooting location for Midnight Express and World War Z, was the most popular place for directors to point their cameras, with 20 films having been shot at the medieval fort. Ramla Bay in Gozo came in at a close second, with 18 films, followed by Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, with 10. Comino’s Blue Lagoon, the iconic location for The Count of Monte Cristo and Troy, played host to seven films, according to GoCompare, with Senglea sharp on its heels with five films.

The list, which is topped by the US, the UK and Canada, was compiled using information gleaned from IMDb and was restricted to films and TV shows released in the past 20 years. Film studios were then also removed from the equation, which may account for the absence on the list of the world-famous water tanks at the Malta Film Studios.
