Travel back in time to the 13th century! Explore Zurrieq’s Lunzjata chapel from the 1200s
If you plan on visiting Zurrieq this centuries old medieval chapel must be on your list.
The Lunzjata chapel has a history that dates all the way back to 13th century, that’s around 800 years ago!
It was first built during the time of 1200s but was rebuilt again in the 15th century, having been consecrated in 1480.
There’s evidence to support that the chapel was not originally a Roman Catholic one but was used as a mosque instead. This is because the building points to Mecca and the apse had the shape of a 'qibla'. Afterall, the Arabs ruled Malta from the year 827 till 1091, leaving quite a strong influence.
It eventually fell int a depleted state sometime in the 18th century, but it was restored once again in the early 19th century by a Zurrieq native.
There was even a time where it was used as a stable, leaving the frescos in quite a deteriorated state.
It is home to many beautiful frescos depicting many saints including Saint George, Saint Paul, Saint Andrew, Saint James, Saint Agatha and many more.
The chapel is now in the care of the ‘Din l-Art Helwa’ organisation.
