Throwback to 1987! Photos show the only time the unique Concorde aeroplane landed in Malta
It was a once in a lifetime trip.
37 years ago, a beautiful Concorde plane landed in Malta for the very first and also last time.
It was the 3rd November 1987 when Air France brought football fans to Malta on a special charter flight.
These photos shared by the Facebook page 'Malta Airport Movements by John Visanich' capture the moment this rare aeroplane visited Malta.
The kind of plane no longer exists or flies today but back in its day it was truly a beauty. It could fly and cross oceans at a much higher speed than the planes used today. In fact, in 1996 British Airways crossed from New York to London in just 2 hours and 52 minutes, a record which passenger planes that still holds today. Today, these flights typically range between six to seven hours.
Yet despite its speed the Concorde stopped flying in 2003. This was largely because of how noisy and extremely expensive it was to operate. Not enough profit was being made.
On top of that, in 2000 an Air France Concorde flight crashed right after take-off, killing all 109 people on board together with another four on the ground, making passengers lose trust in the aeroplane.
The service launched again in November 2001 but people were extremely apprehensive of air travel as a whole due to the 9/11 attacks. By 2003 all airlines operating the plane decided to retire it and it has not flown ever since.
